Yesterday (3 May 2023) in an auction held by the Agricultural Cooperative of Agioi Apostoloi (Southern Laconia, region of Peloponnese) a batch of Athinoelia variety (125 t.), premium quality, has been sold at a price of 6.15 €/kg. That is a record price for Greek market surpassing the psychological threshold of 6 €. At the same time other Agricultural Cooperatives in Molaoi and Papadianika, in Laconia also, are already selling at €6.
It should be noted that prices, of all quality categories, are continuously rising during last months mainly because the news from Spain have been confirming not only that this year production will be under 700 thousand tons, but, even worse, the continuation of drought and the early heatwave of April jeopardize a very poor harvest for the coming marketing year 2023/24.
Meanwhile, olive oil producers and packers, as well, express their concern about the tolerance of consumption to absorb the corresponding high prices on the shelves of super markets.
