Farmers protest against new property tax

Farmers from across the country  gather in Athens on Friday December 20, to protest against the government's new Single Property Tax.

Protesters will rally in front of Parliament at 11.30 a.m. as lawmakers vote on the contentious draft bill that foresees higher taxes on farmers.

The government expects to collect 2.65 billion euros from the new tax to apply from January 1, 2014.

Farmers are also planning fresh round of nationwide protests in late January-early February 2014 and they left open the possibility of blocking  main roads all over Greece with their tractors , to increase pressure on the government.
